Diploma of Emergency Health Care

This qualification reflects pre-hospital and out-of-hospital workers employed to provide patient assessment, healthcare and transport services. These workers possess clinical skills and theoretical knowledge and provide clinical assessment and pre-hospital and out-of-hospital interventions to patients in an emergency, including providing advanced skills in life support. This qualification applies to a variety of roles within the health care and patient transport system.

NPT's course has been specifically designed for people already working within the non-emergency patient transport industry and hold either a Cert III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport or a Cert IV in Health Care.


The course can be completed within 6 months.  

 

Students completing this course are required to complete a total of 17 units and will undertake at least 160 hours of work placements.  If a student already has a Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport a minimum of 3 units or 1 unit if already if holds a Certificate IV in Health Care.  A gap analysis will be undertaken at the time of enrolment to ascertain the overall number of units required to for the Diploma.  

NPT Heart will assist our students in completing this course to undertake their work placements through NPT Heart's parent organisation, National Patient Transport.  Placements can be available across multiple NPT branches across both metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Victoria.  Students currently working within the NEPT sector will be able to complete the work placements with their current employer.  At least 20 hours will be required to be completed at NPT for assessment purposes.  
 

Course Details

This course is delivered by NPT Heart's qualified Trainers and Assessors over a 6 month period which includes 5 weeks of face-to-face classroom time.

The course has been designed as a mixed-mode delivery program that includes e-learning, pre-reading workbooks, assessments and face-to-face weekly blocks of teaching and learning workshops. 

Between each block of face-to-face classes, students are required to complete their e-learning, pre-reading and assessments.

Entry Requirements

Students must have completed either their Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport or a Certificate IV in Health Care AND currently work within the NEPT sector

Students are required to demonstrate to NPT Heart that they:

  • able to speak and write English - students will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment as part of our Pre Training Review process
  • have access to a laptop or computer to complete online learning and assessments
  • have the physical capacity and flexibility to freely walk, bend and twist, perform safe lifting techniques and perform general ambulance duties
  • hold a current unrestricted Australian State or Territory Drivers Licence
  • current National Police Check (less than 6 months old)
  • current Working with Children Check (volunteer or employee)
  • evidence of protection against specified diseases for the following mandatory health sector vaccinations for COVID-19 (boosted), current year Influenza, Hepatitis B, Varicella (chickenpox), Pertussis, Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) and it is strongly recommended to provide evidence of protection against Tetanus, Meningococcal, and Hepatitis A.   • commit to attending the compulsory 5 weeks of practical classroom time
  • commit to the completion of 160 hours of work placement (16 x 10 hour shifts) - Students currently working in the NEPT Sector are able to complete the work placements with their current employer. At least 20 hours will be required to be completed at NPT for assessment purposes.

  • a copy of your Cert III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport or Cert IV in Health Care including Statement of Results
  • an electronic record of your National Police Check (no less than 6 months old)
  • certified copy of your Working with Children Check
  • completed Pre-Enrolment Health Questionnaire (click to download)
  • completed Pre-Enrolment Immunisation Screening (click to download) together with supporting evidence - note this should be scanned into the one document.  Please note that immunisation details are required due to the workplace requirements of the course where students will be working with patients.

  • certified copy of an Australian Birth Certificate, current Australian or New Zealand Passport, current GREEN Medicare Card, or a naturalisation certification
  • completed and signed Student Declaration - Skills First Eligibility (click to download)

Course Fees

Course fees are outlined in the Course Brochure above.  Eligible individuals may be able to receive subsidised training with funds made available by the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.
