what we do high acuity transport service (HATS)
High Acuity Transport Service (HATS) is unique to the non-emergency transport industry in Victoria. HATS development commenced in January 2006, and was launched on 15th May 2006. The service provides a highly reliable, on time and cost effective transport service for haemodynamically stable high acuity patients that do not require transport under emergency conditions.
Since its inception, HATS has transported in excess of 3000 patients, primarily with cardiac and respiratory conditions. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria govern which patients are able to be transported by HATS.
HATS is focused on maintaining the continuum of complex nursing and medical care for patients during inter-hospital transfers. HATS provide a fully qualified Critical Care Registered Nurse to escort every HATS patient. Our HATS vehicles are purpose designed to accommodate ventilators, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP), multiple infusions, Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) – all without interruption to operation.
HATS provide an invaluable service to the majority of public hospital networks in metropolitan Melbourne including Melbourne Health, Western Health, Southern Health and Eastern Health. HATS also provides a valuable service to Ambulance Victoria (AV) and Adult Retrieval Victoria (ARV) as AV paramedics are able to focus on providing first response and improving emergency response times rather than time consuming inter hospital transfers.
